Department of Finance
The Department of Finance teaches students the art and science of making decisions involving money to maximize wealth. Students learn the strategic allocation of resources for individuals and corporations. We offer three different tracks, Corporate Finance track, Investments track, and Financial Planning track. The finance program is rigorous and our students work in all major financial services institutions, corporations, and government agencies and go on to graduate school. The Investments track has been recognized by the CFA Institute as an affiliated program since 2002. The Financial Planning track is CFP Board registered since September 2012, the first undergraduate program in the state of Maryland to earn this distinction.
All finance majors and minors complete industry-prized skills such as the Bloomberg Market Concepts, Chartered Financial Association’s Ethics for the Investment Management Program as part of the Investments course. In addition, since 2015, all business majors who wish to work in the financial services industry can complete the FINRA’s Securities Industry Essentials certification and the Series 7 certification through the FINA 317 General Securities Registration and Licensing course.
The Sea Gull Fund
An important distinction of our department is the administration of the $2 million Sea Gull Fund. This is an equity portfolio managed entirely by undergraduate students – created in 2000, the first such program among the University System of Maryland Schools – and it provides practical lessons on the working of equity markets.
