Mission
Social Workers for Racial Justice is a club founded and led by Salisbury University social work students to educate, elevate, and empower the community in a safe and inclusive space. The club mission is to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy by facilitating anti-racist conversations that address the reality of race-related stigma. Through advocating for justice for Black, Indigenous and People of Color, the club members work towards developing a campus and community that embraces diversity and encourages change.
Purpose
Social Workers for Racial Justice was established to provide a safer space for students, faculty, and community members to process racial injustice after a series of racist and violent graffiti messages were written on the Salisbury University campus in Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. Due to the stigma and controversy surrounding racial injustice in the United States, the club founders aimed to create an environment for open dialogue where students can express themselves and talk about their experiences regarding race without feeling like they will be criticized or excluded for “saying the wrong thing.” Given that white supremacy is a fundamental pillar of the United States and the social work profession, the founders recognized that there is a need for further education and empowerment among social work students. While SWFRJ was initially created to help further anti-racist education for social work students to facilitate their work with diverse communities, the influence of the club has now extended to all campus and community members looking to further educate themselves.
