What is Gender Inclusive Housing?
Gender Inclusive Housing focuses on creating an inclusive environment where students can live in the same residence regardless of sex, gender, gender identity, or gender expression.
Who is eligible for Gender Inclusive Housing?
Gender Inclusive Housing is open to all students, with assignments to be made in accordance with standard Residence Life policies based upon availability. All students must submit a Housing Contract to obtain on-campus housing. Students who seek gender inclusive housing will also be required to submit the Gender Inclusive Housing Community Application.
Who may request Gender Inclusive Housing?
Any student completing the university’s housing contract process may request and additionally apply for GIH. Parent involvement will result in communication directly with the student to assess the student’s housing preference. HRL encourages students to inform their parent(s) or guardian(s) of their request for GIH.
What if a student does not want to live within Gender Inclusive Housing?
To the extent possible, the University will limit those students in Gender Inclusive Housing to the students that apply to be in such housing. There may be some situations where, due to the housing options available, the University is not able to limit the Gender Inclusive Housing to only those who apply. The University will strive to accommodate all students’ needs in those limited circumstances and will handle each instance on a case-by-case basis.
What will happen to the remaining roommate(s)/suite-mates/apartment-mates, when a vacancy occurs?
Vacancies will be handled on a case-by-case basis given the needs of the students involved. The HRL will work with the remaining students to help the student identify potential new roommates who are mutually comfortable with the living arrangements.
Will Gender Inclusive Housing be confidential?
A student’s request to reside in Gender Inclusive Housing will be kept confidential. Please also see the confidentiality statement listed in the GIH policy.
