Gaining Understanding as a Lifelong Learner (GULL) Quest is SU’s reimagining of General Education assessment strategy based on the implementation of our new General Education curriculum in fall 2024. Unlike GULL Week, which was used to assessed SU’s General Education Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) from 2015-2024, GULL Quest is a bookended pre- and post-test assessment that is meant to bracket the entire General Education curriculum experiences of SU students. Students will complete the same assessments as a part of their pre- and post-test GULL Quest assessment.
The pre-test occurs before students arrive on campus for their First Flight orientation activities. Incoming first-time undergraduate students are asked to participate in GULL Quest assessments as part of their orientation to SU. This serves as a pre-test assessment for our General Education curriculum. It’s important to note that Gull Quest assessments will NOT be used for course placement purposes. These assessments help the University understand student skills as they enter SU.
The post-test occurs during all capstone Experiential Learning courses as a part of the final exam period. Any student enrolled in an Experiential Learning-tagged course will be asked to complete GULL Quest assessments during the final exam period of that course. This serves as a post-test assessment. While your concentrated effort on the post-test GULL Quest assessment is very important to SU, your performance will NOT be used as a part of your course grade. Rather, performance on GULL Quest post-test assessments is used to determine if students are achieving the University’s SLOs upon completion of the General Education program.
