Assistantships
In addition to a number of paid assistantships available through the Graduate School, students who have been admitted into the Master’s program in History, are eligible for a number of assistantships specifically designed to enhance their preparation for careers related to the field of historical studies. All our assistantships come with tuition remission and a stipend and are limited to a maximum of 20hr/week. Call for applications is sent out to admitted students once or twice a year from the Graduate Director. Currently, we are able to offer 3 competitive assistantships in Archival Management, Oral History and Digital Humanities.
Nabb Research Center
One of our program’s best assets is the existence of a rich archival repository, which collections of primary materials that span from the early 17th century to the present, housed right here on our campus, at the Edward H. Nabb Center for Delmarva History and Culture, in the beautiful new Academic Commons building and Library. We offer two competitive paid assistantships at the Nabb Research Center, which prepare students for careers in Archival studies, Library studies, and historical preservation.
While we are continuously working towards the creation of new paid assistantships for our students, there are other ways Graduate students in history can work towards their pre-professional preparation:
- Complete an Internship through the HIST 625 course and receive course credit hours.
- Pursue a special Oral History Internship using the new equipment and resources at the Nabb Center
- Complete the new Non-Profit Certificate at SU
- Attend free pre-professional development workshops offered several time a year by the Graduate Faculty on a variety of topics (write a strong CV, apply to PhD programs, careers outside of academia, presenting at conferences…)
