Scholarships & Financial Aid

For the following scholarships awarded by the Nursing Department, a scholarship information packet is mailed to all eligible nursing majors early in the spring semester. The packet contains one application form and a description of the various Departmental scholarships and materials required for submission. Each scholarship requires a separate application form and letter(s) of recommendation, along with any required essays, etc. It is the student’s responsibility to submit these materials to the Department/ Scholarship Coordinator by the deadline, usually in early-mid March for scholarship monies applied to the subsequent academic year. Applications are reviewed by the appropriate selection committee with letters mailed to the winners by mid-end April.

• Avery W. Hall Scholarship - $500/year for the upcoming academic year awarded to a full-time incoming 1st degree junior or senior nursing major, current 2nd degree student or R.N. student with a minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.5/4.0.
• Garland D. and Vivian J. Bull Scholarship - $200/year for the upcoming academic year awarded to an incoming full-time 1st degree junior or senior nursing major, current 2nd degree student or RN student with a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0/4.0 and demonstrated financial need.
• Marilyn Seidel Nursing Scholarship - $750/year for the upcoming academic year awarded to a full-time incoming 1st degree junior or senior student current 2nd degree student or RN student with a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0/4.0.
• Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society Undergraduate Scholarship - This one-time award of $250 is awarded to a qualified current 1st degree or 2nd degree nursing major. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or greater, rank in the upper 35% of class, and have completed ½ of the recognized nursing components of either the 1st degree or second degree track to be eligible for consideration.
• Gaspar & Rose T. DiGiovanna Memorial Geriatric Nursing Scholarship- $500/year for the upcoming academic year is awarded to a full-time current 1^st degree junior nursing major who has demonstrated a sincere interest in caring for older adult population.
• Virginia Mills Edwards Scholarship- $1000/year for the upcoming academic year is awarded to a full-time incoming 1^st degree junior or senior nursing major, current 2nd degree, or RN student. Priority is given to applicants who are permanent residents of Dorchester County, followed by those from Somerset County, Wicomico, then LPNs or medical technicians desiring to become a registered nurse. While included in the spring scholarship mailing to eligible students, this scholarship is selected by a committee outside the Department.
• Lois Brunkhorst Nursing Scholarship - $500/year for the upcoming academic year is awarded to a junior level nursing major who is academically gifted and demonstrates an outstanding potential for a career in nursing. Minimum qualifications are junior standing, a permanent resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a minimum college GPA of 3.0, financial need as verified by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, a completed application form, and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a nursing faculty member.

For the following scholarships, there is NO application process required of the student. The Department’s Scholarship Committee reviews eligible candidates and notifies recipients accordingly.

• Smith Scholarship - Up to $2,500/year is awarded to a full-time incoming freshman nursing major with a minimum high school GPA of 3.25/4.0 and combined SATs of 1000 higher. All freshmen meeting the minimum GPA and combined SAT requirements are considered for this scholarship. The winner is notified in writing in the spring semester prior to entering SU as a full-time freshman nursing major.
• Margaret Johnson Elmore Scholarship - Up to $2,000/year for up to four years is awarded to an incoming freshman nursing major who is a resident of Accomack or Northampton counties of Virginia with a high school GPA of 3.0/4.0 and SAT scores of 900 or greater. All incoming freshmen meeting the residency, minimum GPA and SAT requirements are automatically considered for this scholarship.

Second priority is given to incoming freshmen who are residents of Somerset or Wicomico counties.

• Fondes Scholar Award – A one-time award of $250 is presented to a full-time incoming junior 1st degree nursing major with a minimum college GPA of 3.5/4.0.

The following are scholarships from organizations OUTSIDE the University or Department. Please read them carefully as they list the contact person and the mailing address to which to send the application materials.

Peninsula Regional Medical Center Junior Auxiliary Board Scholarship

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to deserving students from the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland and Sussex County, Delaware who are training in the fields of nursing (RN & LPN), radiology technology, and respiratory therapy.

Minimum Applicant Qualifications:

1. Must be a resident of Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, or Dorchester counties in Maryland or Sussex county in Delaware
2. Must be accepted into an accredited nursing program (R.N. or L.P.N.) or allied health field (radiological technology or respiratory therapy)
3. Verified financial need
4. Letter of application to the Junior Board Scholarship Committee
5. One letter of recommendation from an instructor in the field of study

Scholarship Amount: $1,000 each, six awards available; can be used for tuition, uniforms, books, liability insurance, etc.

*Must agree to work for at least six (6) months at Peninsula Regional Medical Center upon graduation

Peninsula Regional Medical Center Nursing Scholarship Program

To qualify as a candidate for financial assistance, the student must:

1. Be either a junior or senior-level nursing student at Salisbury University, pursuing initial RN licensure
2. Apply in writing for the funds and provide:
   • PRMC Application form and Program Acceptance Letter from SU
   • Three letters of reference from educators, community members, etc. These letters must come directly to PRMC from the originator.
   • Official transcripts from high school and any post-secondary schools attended
   • An essay entitled, “Why I Chose Nursing as a Profession”

3. Complete an interview by PRMC representative(s).
4. Must agree to work full-time at PRMC for a predetermined amount of time based on financial assistance. Payback time to be stipulated in contract.
   
   Maximum amount of $5,000 is awarded per student to complete the program; to be used for tuition, fees, books, and uniforms. It can be paid directly to the school, bookstore, or uniform stores as needed.

*Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to continue to receive financial support. Students who drop out of the program will be required to repay sums advanced. Students who complete the program and elect to work at another facility before satisfying their commitment to PRMC will be expected to repay the scholarship fund.

Maryland State Nursing Scholarship

Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale while enrolled as a nursing major, reside in the state of Maryland, attend a Maryland college or university, and be enrolled for at least six hours to qualify for part-time. Awards are for cost of tuition and fees up to $3,000 per academic year for full- or part-time study. Each award is renewable on an annual basis as long as student maintains a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0, satisfactory academic progress in the major, and remains eligible for financial aid.

Recipients must agree to serve one year on a full-time basis in a Maryland-based facility for every year or portion therein for which they receive assistance.
