Gender and Sexuality Studies Minor
Gender and sexuality studies has a vital role to play as our society attempts to grapple with evolving gender roles and changing attitudes toward sexuality. In politics, the media, education and our communities, students trained in gender and sexuality have fertile ground in which to make a difference. Students in this minor will explore how gender and sexuality roles and expectations have been produced and shaped by social institutions such as politics, religion, family, media, medicine, education and art.
Why Choose a Gender and Sexuality Studies Minor at Salisbury University?
Students in the gender and sexuality studies minor gain marketable skills such as critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem solving and an appreciation for diversity. The program also provides opportunities for students to supplement their academic experiences. For example, students may participate in Women’s History Month events or Take Back the Night, a statewide conference of the University System of Maryland Women’s Forum. They also volunteer at local nonprofit organizations.
Students may also become members of several student organizations such as Women in Never-ending Kinnections, Campus Against Violence, Women in Leadership and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning Alliance (LGBTQ Alliance).
In addition to a capstone course, students choose courses from a wide range of disciplines, including English, history, philosophy, political science, psychology and sociology.
For a more in-depth study, SU also offers an interdisciplinary studies major with a gender and sexuality studies track.
