Learn a Valuable Trade

Mechanical Engineering Minor

You could call them a master of all trades: Mechanical engineers have a working knowledge of computer applications, electricity, structures, mathematics and physics, plus they’re required to have some understanding of social, environmental and economic factors. In addition, mechanical engineering is at the forefront of developing new technologies for a number of industries including transport, health care, construction and robotics. Such a broad knowledge makes mechanical engineers a major asset to many job fields.

Why Choose Mechanical Engineering at SU?

The mechanical engineering minor requires the completion of at least 18 credits in ENGR with grades of C or better. To satisfy prerequisites for ENGR courses, PHYS 221, PHYS 225, MATH 201, MATH 202 and at least one of the following courses: MATH 310, MATH 311 or PHYS 309 are required. ENGR courses completed for fulfillment of the engineering physics track may not be used to fulfill requirements for the mechanical engineering minor.

Students in the mechanical engineering minor must complete the following courses:

  • ENGR 110 Statics
  • ENGR 220 Mechanics of Materials
  • ENGR 221 Dynamics

Complete at least three of the following courses:

  • ENGR 232 Thermodynamics
  • ENGR 331 Fluid Mechanics
  • ENGR 332 Heat Transfer
  • ENGR 361 Vibrations, Control and Optimization
  • ENGR 409 Acoustics

For a more in-depth study, SU also offers a physics major with an engineering track.
