Forensic science is the use of scientific methods or expertise to investigate crimes or examine evidence that might be presented in a court of law. Forensic science integrates several fields of study to analyze and interpret criminal-related data. Forensic science focuses on the discovery of physical evidence through recognition, identification, testing and evaluation.
The Forensic Science Concentration provides students with a multidisciplinary background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and criminal justice to prepare them for the demands of this field. The program utilizes a multi‐disciplinary approach. This approach will help students achieve excellence, envision their future as forensic scientists, grow intellectually, and pursue career, leadership, and graduate school opportunities.
This program will provide students pursuing careers in forensic chemistry, forensic biology, criminal justice, and forensic technology with a course of study that balances core fundamentals with the applied practice of data science. The Forensic Science track will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to qualify for critically important but highly specialized positions that support gathering admissible evidence in criminal judicial proceedings. The application of forensic science techniques is now in demand in a wide variety of investigative or exploratory science-based industries.
Careers for Forensic Science Graduates
The Forensic Science Concentration prepares students for graduate school in forensic studies or to enter the forensics workforce. Graduates of the forensic science track can work in several types of job settings, including local, regional, state, and federal laboratories and agencies. Private companies, hospitals, police departments and the military all employ graduates of forensic science programs.
Partnering for Success
SU is proud to partner with Wor-Wic Community College (WWCC) to provide an opportunity for students to become trained in Forensic Science on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The collaboration is a great opportunity for SU students to work with experienced professionals to gain the skills they need to be Forensic Scientists. Students in the Forensic Science program will take three courses at WWCC to meet the graduation requirements at SU.
