Bio
Dr. Belen Vicens is a historian of law and society in medieval Iberia and the Mediterranean world, with an emphasis on relations between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. She is currently working on a book manuscript titled Negotiating Power and Privilege: Law, Monarchy, and the Nobility in Medieval Aragon that examines how law came to play a crucial role in politics in the High and Late Middle Ages. She coedited Interfaith Relationships and Perceptions of the Other in the Medieval Mediterranean: Essays in Memory of Olivia Remie Constable (Palgrave, 2021), and published “Swearing by God: Muslim Oath-Taking in Late Medieval and Early Modern Christian Iberia” (Medieval Encounters, 2014), which won ASPHS’ 2015 Best First Article prize. She cofounded Premodern Iberianists of the Mid-Atlantic Association (PIMA) in 2019, served in the Executive Council of the American Academy of Research Historians of Medieval Spain (ARHMS) from 2019 to 2022, and is currently a board member of the Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies (ASPHS).
