Research Interests
My research is focused on understanding the diversity of nitrate reductases in wetland sediments with particular focus on the periplasmic nitrate reductase (Nap). Nitrate reduction is the first step in the denitrification pathway that removes excess nitrates from our waterways. Currently, my laboratory is working on cloning and expressing the catalytic subunit of Nap from various microorganisms found in our local sediments. Our goal is to discover if these diverse forms of the enzyme have significantly different properties.
