The Libraries welcome SU course instructors and community members to collaborate with SU Librarians to plan innovative workshops and instructional sessions.

Library liaisons are happy to work with SU course instructors to revise course assignments, help incorporate information literacy (IL) learning outcomes into a course, and teach library instructional workshops and sessions on finding, evaluating, and using information resources.

Session Details

Instruction should focus on a specific research assignment. A copy of the research assignment itself should be shared with the librarian, along with any additional information (course syllabus, rubric, etc.) that the course instructor can provide to optimize planning.

Timing

Sessions should take place at a time appropriate to the course curriculum and research assignment timeline.

Because instruction content is tailored to each course and assignment, requests must be submitted at least two weeks in advance of a face-to-face session to allow for planning. Requests will be addressed within two business days.

We offer a flexible variety of sessions, from overviews to hands-on workshops. Please discuss the research assignment and desired learning outcomes with your librarian so they can determine the best fit for your class. Read about information literacy (IL) learning outcomes below.
Information Literacy Learning Outcomes

What is information literacy (IL)? Review the SU Libraries IL Matrix to identify learning outcomes, scaffolded from undergraduate (lower- and upper-division) to graduate levels. Reviewing these outcomes in advance will help the librarian narrow down the purpose and scope of the session.

Co-teaching

Close collaboration between the course instructor and librarian is highly encouraged! Librarians have information insight; course instructors know the nuances of subject and assignment content. Let's work together to support student success!

Similarly, course instructors are strongly encouraged to be present at the session. This allows for a stronger connection between information literacy and course content. Students may ask questions that are best answered by the course instructor versus the librarian.
Library Guides (LibGuides)

For most sessions, the librarian will create a research guide (LibGuide) to supplement instruction. Course instructors are encouraged to embed these guides on their MyClasses page for their students to use throughout the semester. For assistance, contact Instructional Design & Delivery. Location

The Guerrieri Academic Commons provides several technology-enabled classrooms, including the SU Libraries MakerLab and Nabb Center Classroom. Instructors are encouraged to schedule instructional workshops in these spaces. The library liaison can assist with scheduling the best room for the session.
