SSU Foundation Grants Awards $3,450 to Faculty for Scholarly Pursuits

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury State University Foundation Grants Committee recently awarded seven faculty members $3,450 in support of expenses incurred during scholarly pursuits.

Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts faculty members Drs. Paul Pfeiffer, Haven Simmons, Jim Welsh, Michael Waters and Jeanne Whitney received grants totaling $2,000.

Pfeiffer, director of the SSU Biron Theatre Program and associate professor of communication arts, received $500 toward expenses while in London and Stratford for the performance of his play, Apology for the Life of an Actor, produced for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Simmons, assistant professor of communication arts, received $500 toward expenses while attending the National Information Officers Association Training Conference in Norfolk, VA, during August. At the conference Simmons will present his research on the evaluation and comparison of sworn and non-sworn personnel as public information officers in emergency response agencies, particularly law enforcement.

Welsh, professor of English and editor of Literature/Film Quarterly, received $500 toward travel expenses while attending two European conferences. Welsh will co-direct the Literature/Film Association Conference at the University of Bath; and present a paper at the International Association for Media and History Conference at the University of Leeds.

Waters, professor of English, received $500 toward travel and living expenses while in Romania continuing his translation of contemporary Romanian poetry.

Whitney, assistant professor of history, received $500 in support of expenses while attending the nine-day Attingham Study Week sponsored by the Attingham Trust in the counties of Somerset and Dorset, Great Britain.

Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology faculty members Drs. Kimberly Hunter and Ed Senkbeil received grants totaling $950.

Hunter, assistant professor of biological sciences, received $500 toward expenses while presenting research papers, co-authored with SSU students, at the joint meeting of the American Society of Naturalists, the Society for the Study of Evolution and the Society of Systematic Biologists in Madison, WI.

Senkbeil, professor of chemistry, received $450 in support of his attendance at CHEMED 99, a national chemistry education conference held at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. At the conference Senkbeil will present a demonstration on the combustion process.
