Shakespeare's Spirited Women Opens September 9 in SSU's Fulton Hall Theater

SALISBURY, MD--Shakespeare's Spirited Women, a solo performance by acclaimed Baltimore actress Cherie Weinert, opens Thursday, September 9, in the Fulton Hall Theatre at Salisbury State University.

"This one-woman tour de force celebrates the the spirit and diversity of Shakespeare's distaff characters," said Dr. T. Paul Pfeiffer, director of the Bobbi Biron Theatre Program at SSU. Performances are 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, September 9-11, with a matinee on Sunday, September 12, at 2 p.m. General admission is $6; senior citizens and students $5; and SSU ID card holders are admitted free.

The Baltimore Chronicle recently called Weinert the best actress working in Baltimore today ... her position as Baltimore's Meryl Streep is assured. Her performance in this summer's The Skin of Our Teeth at Theatre Hopkins was called magnificent. Theatre critic Mike Giulian called her Hermione in Theatre Hopkins production of The Winters Tale "beautifully modulated." Her portrayal of the title character in Molly Sweeney at Fells Point Corner was described as "radiant and illuminating ... an insight for sore eyes." The Baltimore Chronicle described her Molly Sweeney as the finest acting seen in Baltimore since Tony Award-winning Cherry Jones appeared at Center Stage five years ago. "Blessed with a smoky RSC-style voice (think Diana Rigg, Glenda Jackson, Judi Dench) and more talent than we deserve to witness," wrote Howard Gradet, "it's a privilege to watch her work."

Shakespeare's Spirited Women, compiled by Peggy Sydnor lasts about 45 minutes. The program includes remarks about women's roles and the history of women's roles in Shakespeare.

Weinert was born in New Orleans and educated at Ursuline Academy. She trained in theatre at the University of Houston and has performed numerous principal roles at Theater Hopkins. In the last two years she has appeared as Hanna in Tom Stoppards Arcadia and in the title role of Molly Sweeney at The Fells Point Corner Theater.

She has appeared in Center Stages production of Cyrano de Bergerac, and The Baltimore Opera's production of The Stronger. She has also taken an active role in theater education, as a teacher and actor, working with the Childrens Theater Association, among others.
