Environmental Lecture Series: Dr. David Abram, Ecologist/Philosopher, Oct. 13

SALISBURY, MD--For Dr. David Abram, an ecologist and philosopher whose writings have had a deepening influence on the environmental movement in North America and abroad, discusses Perception and Language in a More-than-Human World on Wednesday, October 13, at 7 p.m. in the Wicomico Room in the Guerrieri University Center on the Salisbury State campus.

Abram's talk, the second in this fall's Environmental Lecture Series at SSU, is free and open to the public.

Abram is the author of The Spell of the Sensuous: Perception and Language in a More-the-Human World, for which he received the Lannan Literary Award for Non-Fiction. An accomplished sleight-of-hand magician who has traded magic with indigenous sorcerers in Indonesia, Nepal and the Americas, Abram's work focuses on the intertwined mysteries of perception and language--the way in which these two dimensions modulate the relation between ourselves and the animate Earth.

His papers and essays, in such journals as Environmental Ethics, Orion, The Ecologist, Parabola and Wild Earth, have been widely reprinted and anthologized in numerous books.

The recipient of research fellowships from the Watson and Rockefeller foundations, in 1995 he was named The Utne Reader as one of a hundred leading visionaries currently transforming the world.

Abram maintains a passionate interest in interspecies communication and the rejuvenation of oral culture. A nomad by nature, he circulates between the Rio Grande Valley of northern New Mexico and the coastal northwest.
