SU Theatre Presents 'One Man, Two Guvnors'

SALISBURY, MD---British slapstick, music, double entendres and audience interaction are center stage during Salisbury University’s production of Richard Bean’s Tony Award-winning One Man, Two Guvnors from Thursday-Sunday, November 15-18.

Directed by Matt Saltzberg, curtain is 8 p.m., 2 p.m. Sunday, in the Black Box Theatre of Fulton Hall.

Set in the seaside town of Brighton in 1963, the 21st-century play is an English adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s 18th-century commedia dell’arte work The Servant of Two Masters (performed by SU’s Bobbi Biron Theatre Program in 2011).

The new adaptation follows Francis Henshall, an out-of-work musician who becomes separately employed by two men, gangster Roscoe Crabbe and upper-class aristocrat Stanley Stubbers. Mistaken identities, intertwined love interests and Henshall’s voracious appetite combine for a British farce.

The production features songs by Grant Olding performed by a live skiffle band directed by Lee Knier, music director. Reminiscent of the early Beatles, the music punctuates the action on stage.

London’s The Guardian gave the original production five stars, calling it “a triumph of visual comedy” and “one of the funnies productions in the nation’s history.” The Daily Telegraph lauded it as “the feel-good hit of the summer.”

SU’s production features Quincy Corbin as Henshall, Chris Jarrett as Stubbers and Sydney Grossman as Crabbe, along with Alex Adah, Meghan Baker, Kate Carpenter, Mike DeVito, Dan Frana, Nick Freeman, Bailey Hanna, John McCleaf and Jake Thereault.

Associate director is Chelsea Eline. Technical director is J. Michael Desper. Movement choreographer is Chelsea Pace. Costume design is by Leslie Yarmo, scenic design by John Raley and lighting design by Ryan Bailey. Bailey Kirk stage manages.

Sponsored by the Music, Theatre and Dance Department, admission is $12; $9 for seniors age 60-plus and SU faculty, staff and alumni; $5 for non-SU students; $3 for SU students with Gull Card. The production is recommended for mature audiences.
