SU Named an Official Bicycle Friendly University
SALISBURY, MD---The League of American Bicyclists has named Salisbury University an official Bicycle Friendly University (BFU).
The honor was announced as part of the league’s BFU Awards on Wednesday, November 14.
“We’re proud that the League of American Bicyclists has recognized what we have known for many years: SU is a great campus for cyclists,” said Wayne Shelton, the University’s director of sustainability and environmental safety.
SU is home to one of the East Coast’s oldest and most popular annual cycling events, the Sea Gull Century, which the league has praised throughout its 30-year tenure. Bike-sharing programs also have been popular on the campus, which features several public bicycle repair stations, indoor bike storage at select residence halls and ample bike racks outside most buildings.
“Congratulations to SU for its inclusion in a select class of 45 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Universities nationwide,” said Bill Nesper, the league’s executive director. “The standards for attaining any of the four levels of awards—bronze, silver, gold and platinum—are very high and require deliberate, determined efforts to earn them.
“Universities and colleges are in a unique leadership position to help encourage and enable people of all ages — especially young adults — to adopt healthy, sustainable habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.”
Earning the bronze award, SU joins 193 BFU campuses serving more than 3.8 million students in 46 states and Washington, D.C.
