SU Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Beginning September 10
SALISBURY, MD---From food and music to history and dance, Salisbury University’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month festival celebrates Hispanic and Latino culture September 10-October 4.
Events begin with a screening of the PBS Time Scanners documentary Machu Piccu 7 p.m. Monday, September 10, in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall. In the film, structural engineer Steve Burrows leads his team of experts into the Peruvian jungle in an attempt to use modern technology to answer questions about the building of the 500-year-old sacred Inca city in the Andes.
SU Dining Services’ annual Hispanic Heritage Dinner is 4:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, in the Commons Bistro. Cost is $14.20, $8.55 for children under 5.
That evening, the excitement of “fiestas populares,” the town fairs held in rural villages throughout Latin America, comes to SU during a concert by the band La Patronal 7 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.
Its members are direct descendants of rural musicians from Peru, combining their knowledge of folk culture and formal music studies to present lively performances with vibrant percussion, brass and winds. Traditional dances and masks add authenticity to the band’s performances, at which dancing and audience participation are encouraged.
The concert is made possible through Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America, a program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
A screening of the PBS documentary Dolores is Monday, September 17, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. The film focuses on U.S. farm workers union activist Dolores Huerta. A faculty panel discussion follows.
The festival culminates with the dance performance “Flamenco Pasion” by Compañia Flamenca Eduardo Guerrero 7 p.m. Thursday, October 4, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Acclaimed dancer and choreographer Guerrero combines classical and contemporary dance, ballet and contortion to express the depth of passion and skill exhibited in the many styles of this Spanish art form. Tickets are not required.
Sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Office, admission to all events is free unless otherwise noted. For more information call 410-543-6271 or visit the SU website.
