SU hosts ‘Katajjaq to Hip-Hop’ Performance

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University hosts the concert “Katajjaq to Hip-Hop” in celebration of Native American Heritage Month 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Featured artists include Supaman and Nukariik, Kathy Kettler and Tamara Takpannie, as well as regional musician Shodekeh.

An on-stage discussion and demonstration with the Native Voices performers moderated by Keith Colston, Director of Ethnic Commissions, Administrative Director of the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs and a member of the Tuscarora and Lumbee tribes is 5:30-6:15 p.m.

The program explores indigenous artistic expressions, both centuries old and contemporary, in North America. The performance includes the rarely heard Inuit women’s vocal tradition of Katajjaq (throat singing) and a dancer/hip-hop artist/beat boxer from the Crow Nation.

This engagement is sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Office and made possible through the Folk and Traditional Arts Touring Network program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in collaboration with the National Council for the Traditional Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Admission is free and the public is invited. Those coming from off campus are required to display a visitor parking pass, which may be requested from the Parking Services website.
