SU Education Students Win Bond Classroom Library Award

SALISBURY, MD---Two members of the Salisbury University community recently were named recipients of the Dr. Ernest Leighton Bond Classroom Library Award.

Alumna Katie Lewis of Greensboro, MD and senior Aja Cunningham of Salisbury were each recipients of $500 to build diverse libraries for their future classrooms.

After completing her internship in a third-grade classroom at Greensboro Elementary School in Caroline County, Lewis graduated in May with a degree in elementary education. She also had been awarded a Hattie M. Strong Scholarship and was named a Maryland Teacher of Promise. She will be teaching fifth grade in Greensboro Elementary this fall.

Cunningham is scheduled to graduate in December with a degree in early childhood education. She works in the childcare center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and will begin an internship in a first-grade classroom this fall.

The award is presented in memory of the late Dr. Ernie Bond, a former SU education professor and renowned children’s literature scholar who passed away suddenly in 2016. 

SU elementary and early childhood education double majors may apply for the award during their senior year by submitting two letters of recommendation from professors or mentor teachers and an essay on the importance of a diverse classroom library.
