Guerrieri Art Space Showcases Works by D'Shon Jae McCarthy Through October 15
SALISBURY, MD---The Guerrieri Student Union Art Space hosts the painting exhibit “Epiphany” by Salisbury University junior B.F.A. and information systems major D’Shon Jae McCarthy through Thursday, October 15.
A native of Salisbury, McCarthy has been interested in art since elementary school and practiced for two years in the visual arts program at Wicomico High School. After earning her degree from SU, she would like to pursue a master’s in painting at the New York Academy of Art with an eye toward becoming an art professor.
“I paint to be seen, to be heard, to not be ignored,” she said. “Through every step of painting, from the many sketches that hang on my walls, to biting my fingers when trying to decide what size I want to use, through throwing my hands up when I get frustrated, I am a person who has something to say.
“Painting large-scale portraits has allowed me to move my thoughts and opinions into a dimension that is vibrant, that is judgmental but not discriminatory; it’s a world that I do not want to leave.
“One of the first steps I do in order to begin a large painting is to write: to write many notes, to write poetry, to make frantic marks in a sketchbook in order to get all of my thoughts and ideas out onto a physical surface. I like to write to prepare meanings for my artwork.
“All of my paintings are connected to me on a very personal level and to see the finished works only make them closer. I want my works to be vibrant; I want them to be loud; I want them to be so large they are hard to move around; and I want my work to look as meaningful as I perceive them.”
The Art Space is located in the Guerrieri Student Union’s second-floor concourse. Due to SU’s COVID-19 operations, access to the building is available only to SU Gull Card holders.
