SU Adds B.F.A. With Graphic Design Track at Shady Grove
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s offerings at The Universities at Shady Grove recently expanded with the addition of a Bachelor of Fine Art degree with a track in graphic design through SU’s Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts.
The track is rooted in fine arts with a concentration in graphic design. Students will take courses in web design, user-experience design, package design, branding, illustration and more.
“Design is all around us, and graphic design is a critical element in the success of much of the work we do, certainly in the world of business but in many areas of human activity,” said Dr. Maarten Pereboom, dean of the Fulton School. “We are committed to preparing students for success in this growing field, as creative professionals. Offering graphic design at Shady Grove creates a powerful collaboration and connects us to one of the biggest and most dynamic job markets in the country.”
Among the program’s benefits is the practical experience students gather, preparing them for a career in the field. Those in the program will learn from industry leaders and guest speakers, earn practical experience as a member of the SU Design Agency, complete a semester-long internship and more. Graduates from the SU Graphic Design program have found careers in local, national and international corporations including the Cartoon Network, Disney, and Google.
“Graphic design courses give students the knowledge to excel in the field while hands-on, practical experience helps prepare students for their profession beyond graduation,” said Edward Brown, Art Department chair. “Being able to offer in-person educational experiences at Shady Grove will make this outstanding program accessible to more who can benefit from the opportunity.”
This is the first BFA program and the third SU program offered at Shady Grove, along with a B.S. in exercise science and M.S. in applied health physiology, all located in the state-of-the-art Biomedical Science and Engineering building.
“We are thrilled to welcome the B.F.A. program to the Universities at Shady Grove and to continue expanding our partnership with Salisbury University,” said Dr. Anne Khademian, executive director of USG and associate vice chancellor, University System of Maryland. “Graphic design talent is in great demand in our region and we know that both students and employers will benefit from the addition of this outstanding new degree program at USG.”
The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) offers approximately 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs from nine Maryland public universities on one convenient campus in Montgomery County. Students who successfully complete their coursework on the USG campus graduate with a degree from one of its nine partner universities.
