SU Celebrates Recent Faculty and Staff Successes

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates the following recent faculty and staff successes:

Jackson Initiative Benefits SU Student Food Bank

SU’s Food for the Flock student food bank is receiving an influx of non-perishable food donations this spring thanks to a new initiative created by University Dining Services (UDS) sous chef DelRita Jackson.

Through “Casual for a Cause,” UDS employees bringing in a contribution for the food bank on Fridays have the opportunity to wear jeans and an SU T-shirt in lieu of their regular uniforms. More than 40 percent of UDS employees participated in the first week, donating more than 135 items.

“This is a great example of partnership to support Food for the Flock, stocking the pantry accessible to students suffering from food insecurity,” said Owen Rosten, UDS director.

The initiative is scheduled to continue through the end of the semester.

Small Releases New Book

Dr. Clara Small, professor emerita of history, recently released the third volume of her book series Compass Points: Profiles and Biographies of African Americans from the Delmarva Peninsula, from Saltwater Media of Berlin, MD.

Small first realized the need for more readily available information about the subject in 1998, when a student in one of her classes asserted that African Americans’ contributions were inconsequential to the U.S. and especially the Eastern Shore.

In response, she wrote the 32-page book A Reality Check. It included brief biographies of several historically important African Americans from the Delmarva Peninsula. The Compass Points series is an expansion of that project, beginning with 50 profiles in 2014 and 90 more with the second volume in 2017.

Figures profiled in the newest volume include Somerset County educator Kirkland Hall, Former Wicomico County Council member Ed Taylor and Eastern Shore publisher Joe Morse.

Wolff Named Art League of Ocean City Robinson Fellow

Bill Wolff, associate chair of SU’s Art Department and head of the University’s sculpture program, has been named the Art League of Ocean City’s 2021 Orem and Harriet Robinson Fellow for Contemporary Art and Community Engagement.

The fellowship includes a solo art show in the league’s Thaler Gallery, jurying the Art League Members Juried Show in December, a workshop, and a potential sculpture walk featuring works by SU students at Ocean City’s annual Art X art showcase in August.
