Wednesday September 15, 2021
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University hosts the virtual EnviroKids Literacy Festival Thursday-Saturday, October 7-9.
The festival brings together quality children’s literature, student activists, and educators committed to the environment through three distinct events.
- October 7, 7-8:30 p.m. – Virtual Reception and Green Earth Book Awards Ceremony: In collaboration with The Nature Generation, SU’s Early and Elementary Education Department and Ernie Bond Curriculum Resource Center will kick off an opening reception with authors of the National Academy of the Sciences’ recent report calling for better and more equitable science education. The reception will also honor the 2021 Green Earth Book Awards (GEBA) winning authors. GEBA has recognized more than 180 children’s titles for picture books, fiction, non-fiction and young adult novels, cultivating green literacy and international action by and for youth since its inception in 2005.
- October 8, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. – PreK-12 Grade Children’s Celebration: Students will meet authors and enjoy a celebration streamed into their classrooms. Teachers of primary, intermediate and secondary students from across the U.S. can select from a menu of age-appropriate presentations for their students’ viewing including a plethora of book commercials recommending green titles.
- October 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.- Parent and Practitioner Workshop: Teacher candidates, educators, librarians, parents and citizen scientists will explore how to implement GEBA titles and other activities that foster environmental justice, literacy and stewardship in their schools, communities and homes. This workshop also offers age/grade-specific presentations.
