May Literacy Center Hosts Book Fair May 6

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s May Literacy Center hopes to bolster the reading material available to local students who use its services during a book fair 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 2816 N. Salisbury Blvd.

Through the center, children receive free reading and tutoring assistance. Fees formerly charged for that service recently were eliminated to increase access for area families. Events like the book fair allow SU to continue acquiring books for the center that had been purchased through those fees.

“It’s really about continuing to put books that have characters from diverse backgrounds, but also contemporary topics that are relevant to what children are addressing and dealing with on a daily basis, which changes constantly,” said Dr. Brian Flores, May Literacy Center director.

At the fair, a wish list for the center will guide guests to books that would be helpful for donation. A portion of other sales will be donated to the center for use in purchasing additional culturally sustainable books.

During the event, SU faculty, staff and students will read to children and provide information about the center.
