SU's Give and Go Recycling Program Brings Sustainability to Spring Move-Out
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University students moving home for the summer were able to pack lighter than they arrived thanks to SU’s Recycling Department.
The department’s “Give and Go” program allows students to donate items in an effort to divert waste while giving back to the local community.
The spring semester generated a total 6,092 pounds of waste diverted from entering landfills.
Items collected include unopened food and drinks, school supplies, kitchenware, cleaning supplies, and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories.
Over 378 pounds of food, drinks and personal hygiene items were donated to SU’s student-run Food for the Flock food pantry. and more than 5,600 pounds of clothing, bedding and kitchenware was donated to the Hope and Life Outreach (HALO) Ministries homeless shelter in Salisbury.
The initiative is the latest in SU’s commitment to the Maryland Recycling Act and the goal of becoming a zero-waste campus. Since 2012, approximately 50% of SU’s campus waste has been recycled.
SU’s recycling program began in 1990, and since then, campus efforts have remained on the cutting edge of sustainable practices, including yearly participation in the National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Race to Zero Waste competition, the Eastern Shore’s first U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified new construction project, the region’s first publicly available electric vehicle charging stations, 10 additional LEED-certified buildings, Bird and Bee Campus USA designations, a trayless dining hall, a solar parking canopy producing enough electricity annually to power three campus buildings, and the “green roof” atop the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons.
For 13 consecutive years, The Princeton Review, in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), has named SU one of the nation’s most environmentally responsible colleges. This year, the University is among the publication’s top 50 “Green Colleges” in the U.S.
