By SU Public Relations

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Chrys Egan, associate dean of Salisbury University’s Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts, has been selected to participate in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Becoming a Provost Academy (BAPA).

Egan joins 36 other higher education professionals from across the country selected for the 2026-27 cohort of the yearlong leadership development program, offered in partnership with the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI).

BAPA is designed for experienced deans, associate and assistant provosts, and other academic leaders who aspire to become provosts, providing preparation in the areas most critical to serving as a chief academic officer.

Throughout the BAPA program, participants develop a broader understanding of institutional leadership, engage in peer learning and networking and explore the complex responsibilities facing today’s academic leaders. The program also provides opportunities to learn from experienced higher education leaders and build professional relationships that extend beyond the academy.

Egan recently served as interim director of SU’s Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFE) and has been named an interim associate provost for the 2026-27 academic year.

In addition to her current positions, she is a professor of communication in the Fulton School. Her previous campus leadership roles on campus include serving as director of the Youth Innovation Academy, co-director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (OURCA), Faculty Senate president, Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum teaching fellow, and Business Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) scholar-in-residence.

An accomplished scholar in communication, leadership, and culture, Egan has authored more than 40 academic publications and 50 popular press articles. She is co-editor of Pathways into the Political Arena: The Perspectives of Global Women Leaders and co-edited a special issue of the international journal Merits focused on changing realities for women and work. She also recently co-edited the International Leadership Association’s Transformative Women Leaders book series.

Egan has held multiple leadership positions in professional organizations, including serving as past chair or president of the International Leadership Association’s (ILA) Public Leadership Community, ILA’s Women and Leadership Community, the Popular Culture Association in the South, the Maryland Communication Association.

Her contributions to SU and the greater community have been recognized with honors including the President’s Diversity Award, Alumni Faculty Appreciation Award, Outstanding Research Mentor Award, Distinguished Faculty Award, and University System of Maryland Faculty Award for Excellence in mentoring. She also has twice been named among Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record and is a graduate of Leadership Maryland.

Since its launch, BAPA has helped advance the careers of hundreds of higher education leaders. According to AASCU, 225 alumni have moved into provost positions, and 39 have progressed to college or university presidencies or chancellorships.
