Annual HUEY Awards Scheduled August 1 at Perdue Stadium
SALISBURY, MD---Some consider the HUEY Awards the Oscars of health. When Salisbury University’s Healthy U of Delmarva program rolls out the red carpet at this year’s ceremony, however, the honorees won’t be movie stars and high-powered directors, but local individuals who strive to make their community—and themselves—healthier.
This year’s awards are presented during the Delmarva Shorebirds’ Friday, August 1, game at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
Much like the Oscars, the HUEYs are given in various categories. In lieu of best actor and actress, Healthy U awards $1,000 prizes for healthiest individual, school, house of worship, small business and corporation. A sixth $1,000 prize, the Outstanding HUEY, honors the individual or organization that has done the most to promote healthy living during the past year.
Healthy U is also promoting health and wellness that evening during the Delmarva Shorebirds game. A special Healthy U meal, including a grilled chicken sandwich, baked potato chips and bottled water, will be featured at the stadium’s concession stands, while hula hoops and jump ropes will be available to encourage children to get active.
Sammy the Sea Gull will be on hand for photos—as well as any arm wrestling challenges—while a juggler and face painters provide additional entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. The evening ends with a gala fireworks display.
A free program for all residents, Healthy U provides group fitness activities, local business discounts, and weigh-in and measurement stations throughout the Lower Eastern Shore. Signup locations include SU’s Healthy U office at 103 Power St.; Curves of Fruitland, Princess Anne and Crisfield, MD, and Laurel, DE; Ladies Workout Express and Mid-Shore Family YMCA in Salisbury; the Lower Shore Family YMCA in Pocomoke City; and the Wicomico County Health Department.
This fall, SU continues its commitment to the program with a class dedicated to the research and promotion of health education.
With championship NCAA Division III field hockey and men’s lacrosse teams and a strong intramural program, SU has a longstanding commitment to healthy lifestyles. Men’s Fitness magazine has named SU one of the top 15 healthiest campuses in the United States.
Since taking on the program last January, SU has continued many initiatives and implemented others, including producing a monthly 30-minute healthy cooking show for local public access channels including PAC 14, appearing in special news segments every Friday morning on WMDT-TV, participating in regional health fairs, and partnering with local entertainment venues—like the Shorebirds—to provide health-focused events.
