Biological Sciences Seminar Series Continues Through Dec. 9

SALISBURY, MD---The Biological Sciences Department in the Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology at Salisbury University sponsors a Biological Sciences Seminar Series this semester. The lecture series features professors and professionals from universities and organizations discussing important topics in today’s biological fields. The series began September 9 and featured faculty from University of Maryland College Park and SU. Cellular Biologist Glenda Gillaspy from Virginia Polytechnical University visits SU on Thursday, September 23 to discuss signal transduction in plants. She has taught at Virginia Tech since 1998 and is investigating inositol metabolism and signaling in plants and IP3 signal transduction. SU student Lance Biechele speaks on the biology of fungi Thursday, September 30. Biechele, who is earning a degree in biology, has extensive knowledge on fungi. He holds a bachelor of arts in history from SU and is retired from the military.   Gretchen Messick of the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration begins October’s discussions with her lecture on parasites of the blue crab on Thursday, October 7. Maryland Department of Natural Resources representative Julianna Brush speaks on marine mammal rescue and autopsy Thursday, October 21. Dana Limpert, also from MD DNR visits SU Thursday, November 18 presenting the lecture on Bats! Thursday, December 2, Peace Corps representative Angela Moore speaks on opportunities for science majors in the organization. Molecular biologist Lelang Isaacs from Goucher College concludes the series Thursday, December 9 with her lecture on drug candidates against mycobacteria. Isaacs’ research focuses on elucidating the mechanism of bacterial inhibition by plant compounds. The seminars are held 4 p.m. in Henson Science Hall, Room 103.
