Broadcasts of SU's Brown and Church Carillon Dedication Concert Set September 22-23

SALISBURY, MD---When Salisbury University recently dedicated its new Brown and Church Carillon, carillonneurs in attendance from across the country praised the beauty of its sound.

Those who missed this performance will have another opportunity to hear, when PAC 14 and Delmarva Public Radio (DPR) broadcast the inaugural concert.

PAC 14 airs the performance, by University of Chicago Carillonneur Joey Brink, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, September 22-23. It also will be available on PAC 14’s website, www.pac14.org, under the “Program Schedule” tab.

DPR’s WSCL 89.5 FM broadcasts the concert at noon on Saturday, September 23.

Brink was the first American to win what is widely considered to be the world’s most prestigious carillon competition: first prize and the audience prize in 2014 at the International Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition in Belgium. His one-hour program to dedicate SU’s carillon, on September 6, included classics by Bach, Chopin and Puccini; film themes from Beauty and the Beast and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory; and even some Leonard Cohen.

The Brown and Church Carillon was made possible by at $2.4 million gift from Delaware entrepreneur William Church, in memory of his long-time partner, Samuel Brown. Crowning SU’s Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons, the instrument, with 48 bells and a four-octave range, tuned at concert pitch, is one of fewer than 200 traditional carillons in North America, according the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.

This is the only one at a university in Maryland and one of only three in the state. Its 147-foot tower, designed for the carillon, is believed to be the tallest enclosed structure in Wicomico County.
