Child behavior workshop planned for September 30
SALISBURY, MD -------Dr. Kathryn Seifert and Lynn Gavigan of Eastern Shore Psychological Services present the workshop, "Preventing and Responding to Disruptive Child and Adolescent Behavior," on Monday, September 30, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Worcester Room, Commons building, on the campus of Salisbury University. The workshop is sponsored by SU's Social Work Department and Center for Professional Development.
Society, schools and families have seen an increase in child and adolescent disruptive behavior. This workshop provides social workers, counselors, educators and others who work with children and adolescents an opportunity to develop and enhance the ability to implement effective responses to disruptive behavior.
The workshop identifies risk and resiliency factors associated with child and adolescent behavior, types of therapy, model for interagency coordination and developing a continuum of care.
Seifert has over 30 years of experience in mental health, addictions and criminal justice work. Gavigan brings 20 years of experience in the fields of mental health, childhood development and addictions.
Seifert and Gavigan, LCSW-C, will present their Child and Adolescent Risk Evaluation (CARE), formerly CARVE. They will also provide information to respond to disruptive youths in a "How To" manual type format. Seifert and Gavigan will be publishing CARE with Research Press in January 2003. This is an opportunity to see the CARE assessment presented by it designers.
There will be a panel of professionals from various agencies to discuss how agencies need to interact to create solutions for the child or adolescent that is experiencing disruptive behavior. Panel members include: Joan Smith, regional director, State of Maryland, Mental Health, Lower Shore; Vicky Stover Wrenn, Department of Juvenile Justice, Worcester County; Cary Knopp, assistant director of services, Somerset County; Dr. Mark Bowen, Wicomico County Schools administration; and Dick Goldstein, For All Seasons, Cambridge.
Cost of the workshop is $90 and includes continental breakfast. The program is partially funded by the Worcester County Department of Social Services. DSS social workers fee is $65.
The program is an approved provider of continuing education for psychologists, social workers, nurses, educators and counselors.
