'Contemporary Chinese Artists' Exhibit at SU September 1-29

SALISBURY, MD---In China, as in the United States, art is more than what appears on a canvas.

In tandem with the installment of the Paper Cutting Exhibition of China, Salisbury University presents the exhibit “Photos of Contemporary Chinese Artists” September 1-29 at Blackwell Library. 

The photos reflect the best in Chinese music, dance, visual arts, traditional crafts, opera, theater and even fireworks.

“Culture is a window on the history, life and spirit of a nation, and cultural exchange an important bridge to enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between different peoples,” said Hu Jintao, president of the People’s Republic of China, on a plaque hung with the exhibit during its original unveiling at Washington, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. The exhibit was part of the the 2005 Festival of China.

“We are fortunate to have this exhibit, originally used to celebrate Chinese culture in our own nation’s capital,” said June Krell-Salgado, director of SU’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “Along with the paper cutting exhibition, this is a wonderful way to begin our fall ‘Artists of Asia’ cultural events series.”

Blackwell Library hours are Mondays-Thursdays 8 a.m.-midnight; Friday 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-8p.m.; and Sunday noon-midnight.

This exhibit is made possible by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Salisbury University and World Artists Experiences, Inc., as part of the SU Ambassador Series.

The Paper Cutting Exhibition is in the Center for International Education, 1106 Camden Ave. An opening reception for this exhibit is 5-7 p.m. Friday, September 1. The CIE is open weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., closed holidays.
