Creative Writing Festival Inaugurates SU Writers-on-the-Shore Series Wednesday, September 17

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University inaugurates its fall Writers-on-the-Shore program with a Creative Writing Festival 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, in the Worcester Room of the Commons.

This SU faculty reading includes fiction by Dr. Susan McCarty, poetry by Dr. John Nieves and creative non-fiction by Dr. John Wenke. The event also features student writing, and the SU literary magazine, Scarab, will be distributed.

McCarty has published in journals and magazines including Utne Reader, Indiana Review, Willow Springs and Conjunctions. Holding a Ph.D. from the University of Utah and M.F.A. from Vermont College, she previously worked as a fiction editor in New York. Her short story collection Anatomies is scheduled for publication by Aforementioned Productions next summer.

Nieves has published in journals including Beloit Poetry Journal, Southern Review, Crazyhorse, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Ninth Letter and Cincinnati Review. He won the 2011 Indiana Review Poetry Prize and is a 2013 Pushcart Prize nominee. His first book, Curio, published earlier this year, won the Elixir Press Annual Poetry Award Judge’s Prize.

A recognized scholar on the work of J.D. Salinger, Wenke wrote the first book-length study of the author’s uncollected and collected short fiction and was featured in last year’s documentary Salinger, directed by Shane Salerno. His scholarship, literary non-fiction and short stories have been published in journals and publications including The Gettysburg Review, Resources in American Literary Studies, Cimarron Review and Forbes.
