'Delmarva in Performance' Series Debuts on WSCL June 2
SALISBURY, MD---From chamber music to folk to rock, everything is fair game for Delmarva in Performance, a new series debuting 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, on WSCL 89.5 FM.
Each two-hour broadcast features music recorded live from a concert stage on the Delmarva Peninsula. Current participating venues and organizations include Coastal Concerts, Inc. of Lewes, DE; the Arts Council of the Eastern Shore in Onancock, VA; the Avalon Theatre and Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival in Easton, MD; and Salisbury University.
“Being able to take people to concerts to which they would not otherwise have gone is part of the magic of radio,” said Dana Whitehair, Delmarva Public Radio (DPR) general manager and the series’ executive producer. “For me, it’s a real passion. The reason I got into public radio was to record live music.”
Whitehair has produced similar series at other stations, always to the delight of listeners. He hopes Delmarva in Performance draws similar reactions from the station’s supporters.
“Because we serve so many audiences, we feel honored to bring to the airwaves these eclectic performances, none of which you’ll find anywhere else on the radio; they’re all unique. Everyone who donates to DPR is getting a return on their investment no matter what kind of music they enjoy.”
There are other benefits, as well: Artists and venues receive publicity, DPR is able to broadcast more original content, and listeners have the opportunity not only to listen to their favorite musical styles, but to try new ones they might not have considered before.
“It’s really a win-win-win situation,” Whitehair said. “These are world-class performances.”
DPR program and operations director Chris Ranck hosts the series.
Among the performers are Leon Bates and the Portland String Quartet, the PRISM Saxophone Quartet, the Marian Anderson String Quartet, solo pianist Awadagin Pratt, the Borealis Wind Quartet, solo banjoist Bill Evans, the Virginia Opera’s Emerging Voices, the Tidewater Guitar Orchestra, harpist Colleen Potter Thorburn, the Virginia Symphony, the Jake Schepps Quintet, the Steel Wheels, singer-songwriter Kim Richey, the Allegheny Trio, the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, the American Spiritual Ensemble, Galician bagpipe master and classical pianist Cristina Pato, blues rock guitarist Davy Knowles and more.
Also featured are SU’s Guitar in the Gallery series, SU faculty performances and select performances from the 2014 Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival.
Non-classical performances in the series will be excerpted and broadcast at a later date on DPR’s Rhythm and News station, WSDL 90.7 FM.
