Dr. Arlene White Presents Foreign Language Sessions

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Arlene White of the Department of Modern Languages recently presented two sessions at The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages annual conference in Baltimore.

The first presentation, "Seeing is Believing," was based on the three classes White has co-taught with Ruth Malone, director of curriculum and instruction and supervisor of foreign languages for Wicomico County Public Schools. These classes were based on the video series Effective Teaching Practices in the Foreign Language Classroom.

Teachers Patricia Powell from Wicomico High School and Sherri Harkins of Salisbury Middle School also participated in this session, providing a unique model for professional development.

White, Malone and Powell were joined by Cassandra Neubauer, formerly of Wicomico County; and Debbie Espitia and Leslie Grahn from Howard County for a second presentation, "DIVAs-Dynamic, Innovative and Varied Activities for the Foreign Language Classroom." This session provided pedagogically sound activities based on the national standards for foreign languages and multiple intelligences theories.

Mary Bateman, a student in White's foreign language methods class, also attended the conference as Dr. Brian Stiegler of the Modern Languages Department.

White, Stiegler and Dr. Louise Detwiler of the Modern Languages Department provided workshops for foreign language teachers in Wicomico County in October. The sessions were presented in French and Spanish and allowed teachers to study highlights of French, Spanish and Latin American culture.
