Dr. Jerry Miller Speaks at Spring Honors Convocation May 5

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University honors some 1,800 outstanding scholars and student leaders at its 80th annual Spring Honors Convocation 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Convocation, which dates back to the founding of the University in 1925, this year recognizes students in more than 60 areas of academic life. These awards reflect organizations as divers as international honor societies to the Wall Street Journal to local patrons and benefactors such as the late Frank Perdue and Charles and Martha Fulton.

The colorful ritual, with the traditional procession of faculty in full regalia, the pomp and circumstance of the University mace and flag, the SU Chorale and Chamber Choir, and the Alma Mater, begins at 3:30 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium. This gala celebration of student achievement with awards, scholarships and other academic honors concludes with a reception on the Fulton Hall lawn.

Dr. Jerry Miller, senior professor in the Philosophy Department and recipient of the 2006 University System of Maryland Regents Award for Excellence in Teaching, will address the students. Miller’s talk is titled “A Few Thoughts About the Heart.”

Miller has devotedly served the SU community since 1972, earning accolades from both his colleagues and his students, who consistently rank his classes and techniques among the best at SU. In 1980 he founded the annual SU Philosophy Symposium, one of the University’s most popular events.

A charismatic yet demanding teacher, he challenges and nurtures students in ways that are life-changing. Many go on to law and divinity schools and doctoral programs at some of our nation’s most prestigious universities.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Miller has been a campus leader in such areas as alcohol education and a prime mover in the University of System of Maryland on faculty-related diversity issues.

An impeccable scholar, he has helped educate philosophers worldwide through 16 articles and two books, winning the nationally prestigious Basic Issues Forum Award in Philosophy from Washington and Jefferson College.
