'Earthly Vessels, Earthly Lights' on Exhibit April 22-May 20

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University philosophy professor Jim Hatley has pondered questions of ethics and aesthetics, studied and written on 20th century Continental philosophy and Jewish and Holocaust Studies and led book discussions with prison inmates through a program with the Eastern Shore Correctional Institution. He has built a sweat lodge on the beach at Assateague Island. Now, the multi-talented Hatley reveals his talents as an artist in an upcoming exhibition at SU. The exhibit, “Earthly Vessels, Earthly Lights,” is April 22-May 20 in the Atrium Gallery of the Guerrieri University Center with an opening reception 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 22. Hatley created his works using a variety of media including ceramics, photography, stone assemblage and philosophical writings, which he produced based on reflections from encounters with the natural world–mainly from his personal travels in Montana. Hatley earned a master’s in studio art from the University of Montana, in addition to his degrees in philosophy and literature. He has published works including Suffering Witness: The Quandary of Responsibility after the Irreparable and co-edited a manuscript titled Interrogating Ethics, which is yet to be released.
