Former Maryland Senate Environmental Subcommittee Chair Winegrad Speaks at SU

SALISBURY, MD---As chair of the Maryland Senate Environmental Subcommittee for eight years, Gerald Winegrad wrote, sponsored or managed nearly all environmental legislation passed in the state from the late 1980s through the mid-‘90s.

The former legislator speaks on “What Needs to Be Done to Restore the Bay: The Inconvenient Truths of Bay Restoration” 10 a.m. Thursday, November 20, in the Guerrieri University Center, Nanticoke Room A, at Salisbury University.

With more than 37 years’ experience in environmental policy, including 16 in the Maryland General Assembly as a member of both the House of Delegates and Senate, Winegrad has earned awards from the Sierra Club, Audubon Society of the Central Atlantic States, Clean Water Action and Maryland Public Health Association and is one of only three to earn the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Washington Post called him the Senate’s “environmental conscience.” Noted environmentalist and author Tom Horton wrote that Winegard “is the person who more than any other set Maryland's environmental agenda.” He continues his advocacy today as an attorney and adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland College Park.
