International Herbert Marcuse Society Hosts Biennial Conference November 12-14

SALISBURY, MD---The International Herbert Marcuse Society holds its biennial conference, “Praxis and Critique: Liberation, Pedagogy and the University” at Salisbury University from Thursday-Saturday, November 12-14.

The public is invited to two special events during the conference, which focuses on the role of critical theory across disciplines in higher education.

Dr. Steven Dandaneau, vice provost for undergraduate studies and associate professor of sociology at Kansas State University, delivers the keynote address. His talk, “New Sensibilities, New Universities: Higher Education, Utopian Energies and the Prospects for Liberation,” is 7 p.m. Thursday, November 12, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

SU Art Galleries hosts an exhibition of artworks and creative projects accepted to the conference on Friday, November 13. Also on display are prints by German artist Antje Wichtrey, Brazilian artist Henrique Xavier and Afrofuturist David Brame. Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. A lecture by Peter-Erwin Jansen, editor of Herbert Marcuse's and Leo Löwenthal's unpublished papers, begins at 7 p.m., followed by a reception.

Marcuse was a German-American philosopher, sociologist and political theorist, associated with the New Left and student counterculture movements in Germany, France and the U.S. Criticizing capitalism, modern technology and entertainment culture as new forms of social control, his Marxist scholarship inspired many radical intellectuals and political activists in the 1960s and ’70s.
