Maryland Galleries Showcase Works by Jinchul Kim

SALISBURY, MD---The evocative works of artist Jinchul Kim, a member of Salisbury University’s art faculty, are displayed at two Maryland galleries in June.

“Rendezvous: Hawaii and Washington, D.C., Korean-American Artist Exchange,” a new exhibit at the Chaney Gallery in Annapolis, shows Kim’s work alongside some 50 other Korean and Korean-American artists. The exhibit is June 8-July 13. An opening reception is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 8.

Kim’s work is also displayed through Friday, June 22, as part of the exhibit “Landscape & Nature: A View From Maryland” at Baltimore’s James Backas Gallery. A part of the Maryland-Kanagawa Sister State Program with Japan, the exhibit also features some 44 other Maryland artists, offering their artistic interpretations of the state. A reception is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 5.

Washington critic F. Lennox Campello said Kim “has deceptively brilliant painting skills.” New York Times critic Vivien Raynor, examining his photo-realistic style, wrote “he appears to be technically and culturally transformed … waiting and assisting in the fusion of all the world’s cultures.”

Kim, who has shown his work all over the world, won first place at a self-portraits exhibition held in 2002 at the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis. Other awards include 1986 Artist of the Year for Art Journal in Seoul, Korea. He also received the Phyllis H. Mason Grant, awarded in 1995 by the Art Students League of New York.
