Multicultural Festival at SU May 6-9
SALISBURY, MD-- In contrast to "All War All the Time" headlines, Salisbury University's spring multicultural festival unites students, artists and scholars in a joyous celebration and sharing of global cultural uniqueness.
The public is cordially invited to the Monday-Thursday May 6-9 festival, which culminates in the traditional hands around campus and dedication of a new Link of Nations, with flags of all the countries representing the inter-national community of students, faculty and staff at the University.
The following is a schedule of events, all of which are free:
Monday, May 6:
11 a.m.-3 p.m. -- Spanish Club's Cinco de Mayo celebration -- campus mall in front of the new Henson Hall (noon -- mariachi band, 1:30 p.m. - salsa dancing).
Noon -- Perdue School brown bag lunch discussion "To Study Abroad Or Not to Study Abroad, That Is the Question" by Janine Vienna -- Scarborough Leadership Center, Room 204.
7 p.m.-- panel discussion on "Language, Social Access and Disenfranchisement: Multiculturalism for the 21st Century" -- Scarborough Leadership Center, Ritual Room with panelists Angel M. Caragena, chairman of the Public Service Commission, Washington, D.C.; Martin Ford, associate director, Maryland Office of New Americans; Shu Ping, Governor's Commission on Asian Affairs; and Charles Prattis, former supervisor of instruction, Compensatory Programs, Caroline County Public Schools. Moderator -- Dr. Anjali Pandey, SU English Department. Sponsored by the Bilingual Education Department and Multiethnic Student Services.
Tuesday, May 7:
Noon -- Perdue School brown bag lunch discussion "Cross-Cultural Live Cases:Transatlantic Student & Faculty Teams as Consultants to Firms from Different Business Cultures" by Dr. Memo Diriker -- Scarborough Leadership Center, Room 204.
3 p.m. -- President's fireside chat with Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach on study abroad, followed by the graduation sash ceremony for students who are graduating and have studied abroad, Scarborough Leadership Center, Ritual Room.
7 p.m. -- "The Imperative of Foreign Study, or What Dorothy Really Learned in Oz" lecture by Dr. Stephen MacDonald, vice president for academic affairs, Lebanon Valley College--Scarborough Leadership Center, Ritual Room.
Wednesday, May 8:
Noon -- Perdue School brown bag lunch discussion "The Mysterious World of Global Finance" by Dr. Kashi Khazeh -- Scarborough Leadership Center, Room 204.
7 p.m.-- concert by Bluesworks--Wicomico Room, Guerrieri University Center. Sponsored by Student Activities.
Thursday, May 9:
11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.--entertainment by Keith Marks Jazz Trio--Red Square; Steel Kings--Red Square; Afro Brazilian Capoeira--Red Square and around campus; Chinese Lion Dancers--around campus; "Memory of African Culture" by Djimo Kouyate -- Pergola; Irish dancing and bagpipes by the Celtic Club -- Pergola. Also in the Pergola international wares vendors, fun activities and study abroad booths.
Noon -- Hands Around Campus, with President Dudley-Eshbach, emcee Dr. Jerry Miller and the Delmar Elementary School third grade singers.
1-2:30 p.m.--children's activities--Fulton Hall lawn.
3:30 p.m.--Link of Nations flag dedication ceremony, Lobby, Commons building.
