Nicole Miller Student Commencement Speaker 

SALISBURY, MD---Nicole Miller, daughter of Jon and Sharon Miller of Dillsburg, PA, delivers Salisbury University’s student commencement address on Sunday, December 16, at 3 p.m. in the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center. The topic of her presentation is “Laying the Foundation for Success.” 

“College is much like a chair,” said Miller. “It provides us with the opportunity to lay a sturdy foundation that will prepare us to succeed when life demands it, but it is important to remember and continue to utilize those tools aiding in laying the foundation of who we are today: friends, faculty and family.”          

In 2001 Miller was named the “Most Promising Mathematician” at SU’s spring Convocation, served as a student researcher in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department of the National Science Foundation, presented for Pi Mu Epsilon at Mathfest 2001 at the University of Wisconsin, was a member of the Council of Undergraduate Research that presented a petition for undergraduate research support to congressmen and senators at Capitol Hill and presented at the National Undergraduate Research Conference at the University of Kentucky where her paper was published in the proceedings. 

Academic activities at Salisbury University include membership in Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Mu Epsilon honor societies and participation in Math Contest in Modeling, Henson Undergraduate Research Symposium and the university-wide Undergraduate Research Conference.

 Other campus activities include the Variety Show, Musical Theatre, Chamber Choir, Dance Company, resident assistant and math tutor.

A 1997 graduate of Northern York High School, following graduation Miller plans to pursue her Ph.D. in mathematics.

December 2001 graduates include 527 students--431 undergraduates and 96 graduates. The University is awarding 286 Bachelors of Science, 139 Bachelors of Arts, one Bachelors of Fine Arts, five Bachelors of Arts in Social Work, 17 Masters of Arts, 26 Masters of Business Administration, 39 Masters of Education, 13 Masters of Arts in Teaching, and one Master of Science.
