Ninth Shore Fraud Conference Scheduled Nov. 22 at SU

SALISBURY, MD---Some of the nation’s most prominent anti-fraud experts convene at Salisbury University during the ninth Annual Shore Fraud Conference 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, November 22, in Perdue Hall’s Bennett Auditorium.

Topics include public official and government employee fraud, corporate fraud and identity theft. Emmet Davitt, Maryland state prosecutor, delivers the keynote presentation, “Tenacity with Conviction.” Other speakers include Jerome Mayne, a former white-collar criminal; and John Silco, a leading national identity theft expert.

Davitt was appointed state prosecutor in November 2010. He is charged with investigating and prosecuting certain criminal offenses committed by public officials or employees, including state election violations, public ethics and conflict of interest laws, bribery, misconduct in office, extortion, perjury and obstruction of justice. The former deputy general counsel for the Maryland Public Service Commission, he spent much of his career in the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, where he led the Insurance Fraud Division for seven years.

Mayne speaks on “Fraud and Consequences: All That Ethical Jazz.” In his mid-20s, Mayne was an aspiring financial professional starting his career at a national mortgage banking corporation. He grew as an entrepreneur, founding his own companies and running them as president and CEO. His past came back to haunt him, however, when a series of FBI investigations, indictments and criminal court appearances connected with that first job landed him a 21-month prison sentence. He was charged with mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. Since his release from prison, he has shared his story in hopes of helping business professionals and students make the right decisions. His presentations satisfy the two-hour Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Ethics requirement, as well as four-hour State CPA Society Ethics requirements.

Sileo speaks on “Think Like a Spy: Bulletproof Your Business.” The speaker was a victim of identity theft when an “internal spy” used his identity to commit a series of crimes, including $300,000 worth of digital embezzlement. Sileo spent two years fighting to stay out of jail as he and his business were held legally and financially responsible. The breach ultimately destroyed his company.

Today, he helps others protect themselves from similar circumstances as president of The Sileo Group and through is award-winning book Stolen Lives: Identity Theft Prevention Made Simple. He has appeared on 60 Minutes and is regularly featured on NBC, ABC and FOX, among others. His clients have included the U.S. Department of Defense, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Federal Trade Commission and Federal Reserve Bank.

The Delmarva and SU chapters of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), Accounting and Legal Studies Department of SU’s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business and the Iota Pi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honor Society sponsor the conference.
