PAC 14 Program Features Advice on Colon Cancer Screening

SALISBURY, MD---Peninsula Regional Medical Center, along with Salisbury University’s Nursing Department and PAC 14, continue the medical series Focus on Health with Dr. John O. Meadows, gastroenterologist and chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at Peninsula Regional.

Meadows performs a colonoscopy, which is a colon cancer screening technique. PAC 14 cameras take viewers to the hospital’s Endoscopy Center, showing what is involved in this life-saving procedure as well as how to prepare for it.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Those 50 and older are at risk for colon cancer, even if they have no symptoms and no family history of the disease. One of the most powerful weapons in preventing colorectal cancer is regular colorectal cancer screening.

In many cases, regular colorectal cancer screening may help prevent colorectal cancer. This is because some polyps, or growths, can be detected and removed before they have the chance to turn into cancer. Screening may also result in finding colorectal cancer early, when it is highly curable.
