SU Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Beginning September 12
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates Hispanic history and culture during September, widely recognized as Hispanic Heritage Month, with a special dinner, films and a rags-to-riches talk by the popular “The Cuban Guy.”
SU’s series of events begins Wednesday, September 12, with a special dinner featuring traditional Hispanic foods. Enjoy chicken taquitos, Puerto Rican pink beans, avocado hummus with tortilla chips and Tex-Mex zucchini slaw from 5-7 p.m. in the Bistro of the Commons.
Other items on the menu include mock sangria, pork chops with onions, seafood medley, white rice, corn bread, chickpeas, spinach, churros, tres leches cake and trembleque (coconut rice pudding with soy milk). Cost is $9.68, $5.95 for children 6-12, free for children 5 and under. For more information call 410-677-4685.
At 7 p.m. after the dinner, enjoy traditional Mexican music blended with Caribbean beats and Afro-Latin rhythms played by the band Chéjere in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Co-sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs, World Artist Experiences, Inc., and the Embassy of Mexico, the band’s performance is part of the SU Ambassador Series.
The Hispanic Heritage Month series continues Monday–Thursday, September 24-27, with screenings of popular Hispanic films. Designed to provide a cultural and educational experience, each film is 7 p.m. in Devilbiss Hall, Room 123. They are:
• Monday – A Day without a Mexican, a fictional account of life in California if every Latino inexplicably disappeared.
• Tuesday – City of God, the story of two boys from a violent Rio de Janeiro neighborhood, whose lives took very different paths.
• Wednesday – Real Women Have Curves, the tale of a first generation Mexican-American teenager balancing old-world values and mainstream ambitions.
• Thursday – Latin Kings of Comedy, featuring stand-up comedians George Lopez, Cheech Marin, Joey Medina, Alex Reymundo and Paul Rodriguez.
The series concludes Thursday, September 27, with inspirational speaker Andres Lara, “The Cuban Guy.” At 7 p.m. in the Wicomico Room, he shares his journey from living on the streets at age 16 to having achieved personal and millionaire-status financial success just 10 years later.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide beginning September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
