SU Celebrates Multicultural Festival Week May 1-May 5

Multicultural FestivalSALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates its 23rd annual Multicultural Festival Week, Tuesday-Saturday, May 1-5.

This year’s theme is “There Is More Power in Unity Than Division,” based on a quote by U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri.

Activities begin with SU’s annual President’s Diversity Awards presentation 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the Worcester Room of the Commons.

That evening, the student dance group Substance performs at 6 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium, spotlighting various dance styles including jazz, ballet, hip-hop and modern.

Wednesday, May 2, is Multicultural Festival Day. Activities are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Pergola (rain location: Guerrieri Student Union (GSU) Wicomico Room). Performers include the Steel Kings Jamaican steel drum band. SU clubs and organizations host educational table displays during the event.

That evening, from 4:30-7:30 p.m., University Dining Services and the Cultural Affairs Office host a “Taste of the Caribbean” dinner, also featuring the Steel Kings, in the Commons. Cost is $13.50, $8.15 for children ages 5 and under. Reservations are not required.

Events conclude with the African Student Association’s annual Multicultural Showcase 6 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in the Wicomico Room. Student organizations showcase cultures through song, dance and interpretation.

Related exhibits throughout the week include “I Am Psyched!” highlighting the contributions of women of color in the field of psychology, in the Pocomoke Room of the GSU; and a public art installation of talking sticks created through a workshop with artist-in-residence Amber Robles Gordon in the GSU Atrium.

Sponsored by the Multicultural Student Services Office, Multicultural Alliance, and Housing and Residence and Vice President of Student Affairs offices, admission to all Multicultural Festival Week events is free and the public is invited. Activities are offered as part of “SU Is US,” an initiative promoting diversity and inclusion on campus.
