SU Electronic Gallery Presents 'Electro Kinetic Grammar' August 26-October 19

SALISBURY, MD---Millions can picture iconic images of rock ’n’ roll drummers like Keith Moon, Sheila E. and Stewart Copeland behind their sets, playing to sold out stadium crowds.  But what does drumming look like … from the inside?

Visiting artists Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere attempt to answer that question during the exhibit “Electro Kinetic Grammar.” The installation is on display August 26-October 19 at Salisbury University’s Electronic Gallery, Teacher Education and Technology Center Room 128. An artists’ talk is 5 p.m. Thursday, October 17, in Fulton Hall Room 111.

Images and video from the exhibit blend medical science and music with art. Nevarez and Tevere work with students from SU’s Health and Sport Sciences Department who will take electrocardiogram (EKG), electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) readings from Nevarez as he performs on a drum set. The visual results are a testimony to the relationship between the drummer’s mind and body, and the impact of drumming styles and repetition on both.

Nevarez, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and Tevere, of the College of Staten Island – City University of New York (CUNY), have collaborated to combine art and sound in a number of projects. They have exhibited in Italy, France, Brazil, Germany and Mexico, and at traditional and non-traditional U.S. venues including New York’s Staten Island Ferry. Their recent awards include a Creative Capital fellowship and an Art Matters grant.

Electronic Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and other times by appointment. Sponsored by SU Art Galleries, admission is free and the public is invited.
