SU Foundation Awards 2015 Marshall W. Moore Scholarships
SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Foundation, Inc.’s 2015 Marshall W. Moore Scholars are all non-traditional students with demonstrated academic excellence and a desire to achieve.
Each has received $1,000 to support his/her studies in the upcoming academic year. The annual scholarship honors the Foundation’s longest-serving original member, Marshall Moore ’48. Fellow board members created and financed the nearly $200,000 endowment upon his retirement in 2006.
This year’s recipients are:
• Kathryn Baylis, 54, of Pocomoke City, MD, who enrolled in college for the first time after the recession and is working toward a B.A. in conflict analysis and dispute resolution and minor in psychology;
• Aaron Dufrene, 23, of Stockton, MD, a communication arts major and music minor, who transferred to SU from Wor-Wic Community College;
• Janae Fontaine, 37, of Salisbury, a full time accounting associate who, after overcoming serious health challenges, is pursuing a B.S. in management;
• Simona Griffith, a 25-year old political science and English for Speakers of Other Languages major who came to work in Ocean City, MD, as Lithuanian student and now owns a small retail business there;
• Jennifer Krieck, 26, of Earleville, MD, a veterinary technician with an interest in treatment research who commutes two hours, one way, to study biology;
• Jayson Marcarelli, 28, of Salisbury, a former sushi chef who has returned to college to study biology;
• Mark Richardson, 36, of Salisbury, a philosophy major who has two decades of food service experience and plans to study abroad in Thailand in the fall; and
• Danielle Strauss, 24, of Germantown, MD, a transfer student who is working to become a teacher.
SU juniors and seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible for the scholarship, with preference given to those with financial need.
Moore and other University friends established the SU Foundation in 1973. During his 33 years of service, Moore helped grow the fundraising arm and, with his wife Ruth, supported campus organizations including the May Literacy Lab, Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art and Salisbury Symphony Orchestra. They also contributed to scholarships and the construction of the Alumni House.
“Both Marshall and Ruth would be proud of the hard work and perseverance by these students to finish their higher education,” said Jason Curtin ’98, assistant vice president for development and alumni relations and deputy director of the SU Foundation.
Since its creation, the SU Foundation has enriched the academic growth and physical expansion of SU through the support of student scholarships, faculty research, new facilities and community outreach.
