SU Hosts Maryland History Day Regional Competition

SALISBURY, MD---Some 48 students from Wicomico and Somerset counties recently advanced to the Maryland National History Day competition following first- and second-place finishes at the local contest, held at Salisbury University.

This year’s theme was “Conflict and Compromise in History.”

Winners of the third annual Eastern Shore National History Day competition advancing to the state level from Wicomico County include:

•    Junior paper, first place – “The Crusades: Conflicts and Compromises of the Third Crusade” by Gianfranco Secondi, Salisbury Middle School

•    Junior group exhibit, first place – “The Civil Rights Movement: The Fight for Equal Opportunities and Rights for All U.S. Citizens” by Kaela Mitchell and Pilar Hernandez, Salisbury Middle School

•    Junior group performance, first place – “The Spanish Inquisition” by Riley Watson, Sabeeh Shahid, Ryan Selser and Anthony Moore, Salisbury Middle School

•    Junior group performance, second place – “PTSD and World War II” by Diego Lorenzen and Derrick Jung, Salisbury Middle School

•    Junior individual documentary, first place – “Overcoming a Crisis: The Economic Recession and Its Impact on South Korea” by Hannah Park, Salisbury Middle School

•    Junior group documentary, first place – “Martin Luther King Jr.” by Madestyn Shellabarger and Andra-Lyn Brown, Salisbury Middle School

•    Senior group website, first place – “The U.S. and North Korea: Conflict and Compromise” by Da-Mon Mills, Abrahan Cervantes, Alexis Blanchfield and Ryan Bratten, Wicomico High School

•    Senior group website, second place – “Cryptocurrency: Currency of the Future” by Austin Goldsborough, Madison McMichael, Chaz Payne and Teah Ivey, Wicomico High School

•    Senior group documentary, first place – “Thalidomide: How a Tragedy Became and Cure” by Hannah Hoang and Sarah Runge, Parkside High School

•    Senior group documentary, second place – “Bridging the Divide: The Chesapeake Bay Bridge” by Felipe Calderon, James Hsia, Anisah Khattak, Samantha Glenn and Gabrielle Hunt

Winners advancing to the state competition from Somerset County include:

•    Junior group website, first place – “The Conflict/Compromise of Muhammad Ali” by Ahmed Babikir and Neaven Nasuro, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior group website, second place – “Conflict and Compromise of the Salem Witch Trials” by Brook’lynn Snyder and Jenna Phillips, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior individual exhibit, first place – “Selling Souls for Sugar Conflict/Compromise” by Ta’Niya Freeman, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior individual exhibit, second place – “Conflict/Compromise of the Tobacco Industry” by Eduardo Hernandez Tovar, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior group exhibit, first place – “Olive Branch Petition” by Jamira Hutt-Rubles and Logan Lankford, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior group exhibit, second place – “Conflict/Compromise of the Berlin Wall” by Cassidy Cavins, Natalie Watkinson, Gracie Daniels and Hannah White, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior group performance, first place – “The Conflict and Compromise of Harriet Tubman” by Kalayah Murray and Katera Jones, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior group performance, second place – “The Conflict and Compromise of Harriet Tubman” by Abigail Pankratz and Katelyn Holland, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Junior individual documentary, first place – “Conflict and Compromise of the Mason-Dixon Line” by Sierra Sparrow, Somerset Intermediate School

•    Senior individual exhibit, first place – “Civil Rights” by Ceairra Davis, Washington Academy and High School

•    Senior group documentary, first place – “The Conflict and Compromise of Black Wall Street” by Ashawti Buckner, Kelsey McIntyre and Xavier King, Washington Academy and High School

Advising faculty for the student entries included Jeremiah Mowen of Salisbury Middle School, Randi Merritt of Somerset Intermediate School, Nicholas Dudas and Ron Wainwright of Parkside High School, Harry Suber of Wicomico High School, and Stephen Smith of Washington High School and Academy. In all, some 64 students participated.

The Eastern Shore National History Day contest was sponsored by SU Libraries, the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts, and Wicomico and Somerset county public schools. Salisbury Mayor Jake Day served as master of ceremonies.

The Maryland National History Day competition, sponsored by Maryland Humanities, is scheduled Saturday, April 28, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
