SU Hosts National Foreign Language Week Film Series March 3-6

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates National Foreign Language Week March 2-8 with a series of popular international films Monday-Thursday. All movies are subtitled in English.

Monday, March 3, 7 p.m., Fulton Hall Room 111, Le Dernier Métro (The Last Metro), directed by Francois Truffaut (French, 1980) – This love story follows actress and theater manager Marion Steiner, who must keep her Jewish husband hidden in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1942 while trying to keep her business alive with a new play. The movie received Best Foreign Film nominations at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes.

Tuesday, March 4, 8 p.m., Fulton Hall Room 111, Balseros (Cuban Rafters), directed by Carlos Bosch and Josep Maria Domènech (Spanish, 2002) – This film tells the story of Cuban refugees who risk their lives to reach the United States and what life is like once they get there.

Wednesday, March 5, 7 p.m., Henson Hall Room 243, Tillsammans (Together), directed by Lukas Moodysoon (Swedish, 2000) – This comedy, set in the 1970s, revolves around changing attitudes about political power, race, gender equality and sexuality, and how a non-traditional household handles the different beliefs surrounding them.

Wednesday, March 5, 8 p.m., Scarborough Leadership Center, Mostly Martha, directed by Sandra Nettlebeck (German, 2001) – This film tells the story of Martha, the head chef at a chic restaurant, whose life is disrupted when her 8-year-old niece comes to live with her. As Martha struggles to care for her headstrong charge, romance blossoms with a new chef at the restaurant. It was remade in the United States in 2007 as No Reservations.

Thursday, March 6, 8 p.m., Fulton Hall Room 111, Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side), directed by Natalia Almada (Spanish, 2005) – Told using Mexico’s 200-year tradition of corridor music, this film follows an aspiring composer who seemingly has only two choices to lead a comfortable life: traffic drugs or illegally cross the border in to the United States.

Sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies, the screenings are free and the public is invited. Because some of the films are offered in connection with classes, viewers are asked to arrive on time.
